quote for the day

March 10, 2010

Creativity and excellence require selfishness. So does evolution. When you know you’re onto something — a potential breakthrough of any kind — you need the purest kind of focus and concentration possible. You need to answer to the callings of your heart and mind before you answer to the callings of the tribe. You need to accept that a reasonable and responsible level of selfishness builds long-term benefits for everyone you care about. ~ Thomas J. Leonard

I’ve spent a lifetime getting too caught up in what everyone else wants and needs. I’ve sometimes used that as a crutch to avoid facing what I want and need, because it’s scary (and almost unthinkable) to be selfish. But events of the last few days have made me realize that I need to focus on me, and let everyone else take of themselves for a while. Who knows? Maybe they’ll learn important and useful things too. But even if they don’t, I can’t be everything to everybody. I need to start being what I need, for my own selfish reasons, and let everything else fall out as it will.
